Chapter Fifteen
Rachel had composed herself by the time they entered the house.
She wandered around to search cupboards and delve into drawers, but when she came to the makeup box, she turned quickly to look at Mac. It fit now. Maud had been good, a master at her craft. She'd transformed Mac into someone entirely different. Her face was flawless, but Rachel wanted the imperfection back. The scar was her now, not this Barbie Doll in front of her.
Rachel walked across and looked her in the eye.
"What's with the getup, Mac?"
Mac held her gaze then smiled resignedly. "I'm surprised you guessed, but I shouldn't be. You're an astute investigator. And smart.â She shrugged. âDo you like the new me?"
"No. I prefer the old one.â Rachel moved forward and pulled off the wig. She ran her fingers through the blond hair to fluff it up. "I want the tousled blond hair, the casual gear, and the scar. They're more real to me than this facade."
"I like the old me, too." She gazed at Rachel dejectedly. "Would you do something for me?"
âWhat, Mac?â
"Hold me while I grieve for my sister."
A warning bell peeled in Rachel's head. She was the investigating officer in a murder case where Mac's sister was the victim. She should keep her distanceâif she held her close, they may be powerless to stop. But Mac looked so sad she couldn't bring herself not to give comfort. She opened her arms, and she fell into them.
Mac trembled against her and then wept. She pushed her face into Rachel's skin to stem the flow. "I wanted you to be there to hold me when I heard she was dead."
"I wanted to be there for you too. I wished I could find you when I saw Dana's body."
Mac gulped back the tears. "It's not fair. Dana was one of those special people who wouldn't hurt a fly. She was the better one of the two of us, always helping someone. It should have been me, not her."
Rachel rocked her back and forth. "Shush now. You couldn't have helped her."
When she began sobbing again, Rachel pulled her closer to ease her anguish. She ran her fingers through her hair, crooning soothing words, her heart aching for the wounded woman in her arms.
As she lightly massaged Mac's scalp and nursed her, Rachel wasn't conscious of the moment when her hug was no longer a simple comfort. When Mac tensed, Rachel's skin began to tingle. Something inside stirred as she became acutely aware of the body pressed against hers. When she felt Mac press further against her and rub her cheek against her shoulder, the feeling became insistent and demanding.
A tiny shudder rippled through Rachel as Mac began to stroke her back. A breathy moan escaped from Mac, sending arousal sweeping through Rachel. She nuzzled her lips into the soft hollow at the base of her neck and sucked lightly.
Then she realized what she was doing and forced herself to ease out of the embrace.
âNo, no, sweetie, donât move away,â protested Mac, pulling her back.
